Underland
April 22, 2025A Cinematic documentary by Robert Petit, Underland is set to premiere at Tribeca Film festival in the documentary competition category.
Underland is based on the best selling book “Underland” by Robert Macfarlane. Filmed by Ruben Woodin Dechamps and scored by Hannah Peel. Production also included Jess Harrop of Sandbox Films, Lauren Greenwood of Planet Octopus, André Singer of Spring Films and Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel from Protozoa all who helped bring the film to life.
Throughout the documentary narration can also be heard by Oscar- nominated Sandra Hüller helping to capture this story.
Underland explores the world beneath our feet. To most it is a place only of fear and darkness, though to a brave few it is one of knowledge and wonder to be found nowhere else.
It voyages into worlds rarely glimpsed by human eyes. Beginning in the shallow soils beneath an old ash tree, we travel alongside several ‘astronauts of the underworld’ into ancient sacred caves, flooded storm drains, melting glaciers, underwater burial chambers and a deep underground laboratory built to solve the mysteries of the Universe.
The film has been 4.5 years in the making – & the team have created something astonishing. It’s a documentary film – but/& one that’s experimental in form and tone. It sets both matter and metaphor shivering in strange, powerful ways. It’s compassionate & beautiful. The story of the film’s filming is a Herzogian epic in its own right. Again & again, Rob and Ruben filmed in staggeringly challenging conditions; each time they surfaced with extraordinary footage. It has all come into being in large part because of the questing, obsessive, generous, perfectionist vision of its director. Rob Petit is a genius, simply put – & he has a huge heart. Sometimes in the darkness you can see more clearly.- Author Robert Macfarlane
