ONSIGHT supplies winning camera & post production solutions to 'First'

20th November, 2012

The summer was dominated by the success of London 2012 and this month sees the release of First, The Official Film of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The story focuses on the experiences of twelve international athletes, competing in the Olympics for the very first time. ONSIGHT is proud to have provided full production facilities to help capture this sporting history like never seen before.

First is written, produced and directed by Caroline Rowland, Founder and Executive Creative Director of New Moon. The film is independently financed but is supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG).

ONSIGHT’s services comprised of production and post production facilities. Their Camera Rental department supplied a series of ARRI Alexa units, including Zoom lenses, which helped achieve the feature length documentary’s filmic look. Unprecedented access reveals the competitors’ daily life in their home countries and in lead up to the most important step in their careers. The project was shot in a number of locations worldwide before returning to the UK to film the action at the games.

The athletes featured include, Kenyan runner David Rudisha (800 metre gold medal winner and seen above), Team GB’s track cyclist Laura Trott (double gold medallist), Chinese diver Qiu Bo (silver medallist) and boxer Katie Taylor (gold medallist). Caroline Rowland explains, “The narrative allows each of them to emerge as modern day superheroes, demonstrating the full breadth of the experience of being an Olympian - win, lose or draw.”

ONSIGHT provided a full post production service for the film from offline at New Moon’s offices to final finishing at their Soho facility. ONSIGHT’s Colourist David Gonzalez Lozano graded the film, using SGO Mistika. Specific work included heavily stylised sequences, referred to as ‘Hero Shots’, which poignantly introduces each Olympian. The team’s Lead VFX and Online Editor Miguel Caamano Riveiro also produced critical effects to meet the client’s requirements. Caroline Rowland adds, “Working with ONSIGHT has been a fantastic experience from beginning to end. The camera department were truly excellent and their knowledgable team gave us exceptional support throughout our incredibly challenging filming schedule. But it was during post production that they really impressed. David Gonzalez Lozano is an exceptionally talented colourist who has the rare ability to translate verbal descriptions into cinematic light and shade. The finish is stunning and his commitment to making it look that way was untiring. The ONSIGHT experience has been one that I’m looking forward to repeating.”

First is in cinemas from 23 November in the UK and Ireland and out on DVD/Blu-ray from 26 November through Revolver. BBC Worldwide are distributing the film in other territories and talks are underway with NBC for distribution in the US. This new feature encapsulates the legacy of the London Games, bringing audiences closer to the athletes with both entertaining and inspiring results.
