On Sight

The early days

ONSIGHT was founded by Colin Reynolds and Simon Craddock in 1989, both of whom were already established in the broadcast scene. Key early contracts include infrastructure for The Big Breakfast and Framestore's first major technical expansion.

ONSIGHT was originally conceived as a systems and outside broadcast company. Over time, the company responded to clients' calls for both advice and rental of new equipment. The team soon grew into a successful broadcast hire company and we found our base in the heart of London’s Soho. Previous experience of installations stood us in good stead when it came to providing custom hire systems and packages - something the Edit Rental team still offers today.

We have always been committed to new technology from the beginning.  ONSIGHT was consistently among the first to offer new products and technologies including D1, DigiBeta, Beta SX, D3 and D5.

As an early adopter of High Definition, we were the first to offer HD-D5 and the original Varicam.  The business then secured another first with Sony's flagship HDCAM SR format, a year before any other UK company.  The same applied to tapeless cameras, such as the Sony PDW-700, the Panasonic P2 Varicam and more recently, ONSIGHT became the first company to place an order for the ever popoular ARRI Alexa camera at NAB 2010.

Moving up

In 2004, we opened ONSIGHT Upstairs, a £2,000,000 state-of-the-art HD facility.  ONSIGHT Upstairs became ONSIGHT's Lab & Post team. It is a technical facility to support production, post production and distribution companies. Many turn to our post production services for a helping hand with conforming, QAR, conversion and encoding work, with the technical facility delivering material to clients across the globe. Lab & Post has built a reputation for troubleshooting in production and post, a status that is only going to grow in a tapeless world.

An exciting acquisition

In early 2009, ONSIGHT acquired Axis Films, a respected HD & 3D camera hire company. Axis Films was founded by the film department of LWT and over 20 years, they built a successful camera and equipment hire business, based at Shepperton Studios, which shared ONSIGHT's passion for new technologies. ONSIGHT's clients gained access to products from the likes of ARRI and RED as well as 3D equipment and experience.

Today & looking forward

As a pioneering facilities company, we constantly strive to stay ahead of the curve to enhance the viewer experience. The team has become renowned for expert stereoscopic 3D production and post services. Cameras' involvement in the first ever live 3D broadcast and Post's SGO Mistika systems have helped us facilitate a number of high profile projects from start to finish with companies such as Atlantic Productions and Sky 3D. This includes the first 3D programme to be awarded a BAFTA, Flying Monsters 3D with David Attenborough as well as the acclaimed David Attenborough's Conquest of the Skies 3D.  ONSIGHT has also made a name for itself in other formats.  The team is now a leader in 4K from shoot to post.  This was highlighted by the company's move in 2014 to a new post facility near St Martins Lane, offering a 4K projection suite - the first UK post facility to house Barco's new DP4K-P projector.  That same year saw ONSIGHT celebrating 25 years as a facility provider.

Our understanding of the entire production process means our clients are in safe hands to achieve stunning creative results from HD up to giant screen.  We continue our advances in 4K and more recently, we have been embracing the world of virtual reality (VR).  In 2015, the team won a Hollywood award for 360-degree VR.  Watch this space!
